This phrase is believed to have originated during the Great Depression when people had to travel far and wide to look for work, and were often disappointed. It was used during the Second World War by soldiers when talking about the difficult situations they found themselves in, and was later made into a song by Jack O'Hagan and sang at the Tallarook Primary School History Day.
